Abstract

In this presentation, we will demonstrate how interdependence between the writing center and our Composition Curriculum Committee has used multimodality to create a bridge between writing center coaches and students in first-year writing (FYW) courses.

First, we will explain why multimodal assignments and writing coach training became the focus of our research. We argue that multimodal assignments should be included in first-year writing because it empowers struggling writers by helping them find their voices. Next, we expand on how writing center coaches were trained to develop an interdependency with students in FYW courses who were working on multimodal assignments.

This presentation will focus on the how and why of multimodal assignments, including training strategies for writing center coaches about multimodal assignments and the feedback that can be shared to support student voices. In addition, we will provide example writing center training materials.
