The Student Representative is a volunteer Officer position on the OWCA Executive Board.

Position Details

  • Length of term: 1 year (January to December 2024)
  • Time commitment: 4-6 hours per month (includes synchronous and asynchronous work)
  • Renewable?: Yes, up to 1 time
  • Elected by: OWCA membership
  • Openings: 2

Qualifications

We welcome your application regardless of your prior experience with professional associations. The Executive Board will support you as a new Board member and help you to implement your ideas. 

You should apply for this position if you:

  • Are a current secondary school, undergraduate, or graduate student
  • Would like to develop/hone skills in leadership and administration
  • Have ideas for improving the OWCA for our student members and volunteers

Responsibilities

If elected, you would do the following within your monthly time commitment:

  • Represent the interests/needs of students who research, implement, or practice online writing support
  • Serve on at least 1 OWCA committee of your choosing and attend that committee’s meetings
  • Assist other OWCA Officers, as time allows, depending on your interests and professional goals
  • Attend monthly Executive Board meetings, review items that need Board feedback/approval, and vote on Board and committee projects

Professional Development

The Student Representative position provides opportunities for professional development. You could choose to serve on one or more of the following committees:

  • Diversity & Social Justice Committee
  • Accessibility Committee
  • Conference Committee
  • Virtual Events Committee
  • Mentoring & Resources Committee

You will also have opportunities to learn from other Officers, as your time allows. Depending on your professional goals, you could choose to learn any of the following skills:

  • Committee meeting preparation and coordination
  • Note taking
  • Report writing
  • Grant writing
  • Resource development
  • Online event planning
  • Outreach to other organizations
  • Website editing

Your work as Student Representative could lead to future opportunities to later run for another position on the Executive Board, after your term as Student Representative has ended.
