Abstract
Asynchronous tutoring is often overlooked or maligned in favor of both face-to-face and synchronous online tutoring, though each has their own affordances and limitations. There is slowly starting to be more acceptance of asynchronous tutoring as an effective addition to tutoring options offered by writing centers including for accessibility reasons. This workshop seeks to provide attendees with an introduction to screencasting asynchronous tutoring, as well as purposeful attention to how we can design asynchronous tutoring services and tutor training to embrace a pedagogy of kindness.
The presentation portion of this workshop will include a brief overview of screencasting and how it works. The presenters will give participants a list of the many screencasting platforms available while illustrating two platforms more in depth, Screencastify and Screencast-O-Matic. They will also outline how screencasting has been incorporated into their respective tutoring centers as examples of how it might be done. It is important to lay the groundwork for participants who might not be familiar with screencasting technology and its uses. The presenters will explain the concept of a pedagogy of kindness and outline how the ideas relate to screencasting and asynchronous feedback.
There will be three activities related to the information from the presentation portion of the workshop. One will consist of participants considering how they might incorporate screencasting into their own tutoring options, either as an addition to existing asynchronous options, or as an initial asynchronous offering. Another will involve participants trying out screencasting for feedback on provided 1-2 paragraph samples with discussion to follow. The final activity will bring it all together to discuss how to build kindness pedagogy into tutor training.
